In 1994 the US Government through USAID made a grant to the Royal Thai Government (RTG) through the Department of Technical and Economic Cooperation (DTEC).
The University Foundation of Thailand was charged with launching the USAID project and the First Global Community College (FGCC) was established in Nong Khai in 1995 as "a pilot project to establish one community college after the American model in each of Thailand's four regions..." (PIL No. 170 AID Project 493-0341, 17 February 1994). Unfortunately, due to the withdrawal of USAID in Thailand the creation of four additional colleges was put on hold, but FGCC opened its doors in 1996 when the first students enrolled.
Thus, FGCC remains a unique institution for education and development, simply one of its kind in the whole of Thailand.
FGCC seeks to improve the quality of life of the people of Nong Khai-Udon Thani provinces and Isaan region as a whole by means of public education, vocational training and participating in community development programs. The college is run by Thai staff and a wide variety of international volunteers dedicated to provide the best possible service to FGCC's clients.
