A major problem in Thailand's educational system is the insufficient existence of higher educational opportunities for qualified Thai students. More than 200,000 students graduate from secondary schools each year but only about 20 percent are admitted to four-year universities. The situation is especially severe in rural provinces where there are few facilities. FGCC tries to function as a model for absorbing this student surplus acting on a local basis in rural Northeast Thailand.
Better international understanding
Cultural misunderstanding is a common phenomenon. Education holds the greatest promise for reducing ethnocentrism and increasing empathy among the world's cultures. It is also the best prescription to bring peace and economic prosperity to diverse nations and people.
The first step to closing the cultural gap is to further communication. Therefore FGCC puts emphasis on increasing students' level of English along with providing basic courses in other selected languages. Apart from that, FGCC's foreign staff receives training in the Thai language.
A community college that is focused on cross-cultural activities and knowledge holds the promise of a widespread ripple effect as alumni return to their communities, in Thailand and abroad, and make good use of the experience that they have gained.
